Mental Health, Spiritual & Religious Counselling & Professional Training Having worked as a pastoral care practitioner in the mental health sector I became very aware that the spiritual and religious aspect of an individual was being neglected by the client's mental health team and I wanted to know why and if possible to find solutions. This led me to developing a training program (Recovery and Diversity see link in left hand of page) focusing on the DSM (diagnostic statistical manual - the diagnostic tool used by doctors and mental health professionals) V Code V62.89, the National Framework for Recovery Orientated Service and strategies on how to begin a spiritual conversation. This training looks at some of the reasons why mental health professionals rarely take a spiritual and religious history, the types of issues that may be attributed to a spiritual issue (as opposed to being symptoms of a mental illness) and tools that will help in taking an individual's spiritual and religious history. As a mental health pastoral care practitioner I experienced many different spiritual and religious issues with clients, some were relating to Near Death Experiences (NDE'S), some were related to their church and faith, yet others were more confrontational and revolved around spirit attachment and perceived demon possession. Each client had their own unique story and issues. My hope is that with this training mental health professionals will find value in looking at their clients spiritual and religious needs and can do so without judgement.
